Live Player Drafting

2012-11-08 20:14 by ParadokS

Player drafting will be streamed LIVE on Sunday 11th. November at 20:00 CET.
The show will be hosted by yours truly and streamed on Twitch for your viewing pleasure!
Estimate 1 hour 30 minutes for this show. As captains has to pick both for div1 AND div2 it could take slightly longer than last season.

We got a whopping 113 signups which is quite an impressive turnout considering how late the 4on4 season started this season. As you know we promised to include more players this time around. So here is the breakdown on how we are going to run it.

There will be 2 divisions. 8 top seeded 4on4 players have been selected as captains to pick players for both div1 and div2 teams. The div1 teams will have 5 players and div2 teams will have 6 players. Captains are seeded beforehand and pick order is listed in the rules.

Last season we only had 1 division and if a player quit mid season, we had the option to take a player from the "free agents" pool. This included players who signed up but did not get picked, but this season it's a little different. The free agents pool would then be players that did not get picked for div2. That isn't really useful for the div1 replacements. So to try and solve this issue, the captain for a team in div1 can use stand-in players from the team he selected in div2 if needed.
Those 2 teams will have no conflicting match time during each Sunday so hopefully no overlapping games in case a div2 player has to substitute for his corresponding div1 team.

Captains have received the full signup list including a personal seeding tool to help them personalize and seed the players at their discretion. This should help them prepare for the live draft pick and hopefully form the best possible teams.

creative solution! this sounds perfect! gj

The solution for teams with inactive players looks very good on paper. In reality it will work only for DIV1 team.

My experience shows to me that DIV1 players in general much more active than DIV2. Especially when you divide players to 2 divisions. That means that it will be no enough players in some teams to play they div2 match. 6 per team is too few.

Maybe it will not be the case, but I hope it will be some active free agents for div2 teams also.

^my thoughts the other day were that div2 would need bigger rosters than div1 (as B1aze points out, due to activity). But as long as there is a free agent pool for div2 it should be OK.

I like the concept of using players from the div2 sister team to full spots in the div1 team if needed, I would hope this helps to build more of a clan spirit than two independent teams and means more consistent standins than just random players as last season.
#4 ParadokS - 2012-11-09 06:23 (85.195.39.XXX)
The idea of using players from the sister team rther than a free agents pool was more out of necessity. There simply isn't a viable player pool left once div2 teams are formed.
We are aware of the higher risc for div2 teams missing players during season or going AFK, which is why they did get a 6 man roster compared to 5 in div1. Would feel pointless to just keep filling on players to that and get too big teams. After all, the team only has to play 3-6 games over the course of 1 month. Consider it a test, to include more players.

I know some players would have liked to see 1 big division without dividing them into good or bad players effectively, and you are welcome to take up that debate in the forum if you wish. We will review this season and re-evaluate feedback, going into our 3rd season in the start of January.

Only one thing comes to my mind at this point. What's the situation when or if the div2 team is missing a player? Take one from the div1 sister team to stand-in and rape everyones ass? :/

Or use the free agents pool for that ? Ment to add this but forgot :D
#7 ParadokS - 2012-11-09 08:37 (85.195.39.XXX)
If a div2 team needs a player, they can use one from the free agents pool, that's correct. Just like the previous season. Unpicked players, that signed up = free agents. So other top players who didn't signup can't suddenly join the season after it starts and wait to get picked up :)

hot stuff para!

The 6 player limit for div2 is nice, it means even less players will miss out on the action.

Also, the (mostly) rookies who dont get picked should consider arranging mix nights the week before the first games to get some 4on4 experience and also get noticed a bit if any div2 team need to recruit any of them.

Nice structure guys.
I really like the div0 captains picking their own div2 team, and then being able to use them as replacements if needed.

Even if they never need a replacement during the matches this will create a natural pool of players to use for pracs. Having 3 div1 + 1 div2 to start a prac for example. And a bond between div1 and div2 that would otherwise not have been made if the teams were totally separated by different captains.

#19 Rikoll - 2012-11-09 17:11 (80.203.72.XXX)
Can't we just continue picking until theres no players left? It shouldn't matter alot if if some div2 teams consist of 7 players instead of 6.

#23 Fastidious - 2012-11-09 19:03 (76.223.253.XXX)
looks like a creative solution and might work quite well in practice too. one big advantage people might be over looking to this setup is captains are the highest quality as possible for all teams. while i prefer an all inclusive one division league, in that case you'd need many more captains who might be of worse quality. captains are the most important element of a draft since they pick all players and are generally the best player on the team. if a team has a substandard captain not only will their team be much weaker do to worse draft picks but the league overall will be much less competitive.

can't wait for matches and demos! milton must be stopped! one strategy used in other draft leagues is "hate drafting" but i'm not sure it's effective. basically the idea is if you know captain X wants player Y very badly you draft him instead if you can make it work for your team even if that player is not your first choice. the theory is sometimes it's better to deny the top captains their ideal picks even if it slightly hurts your own team because it hurts the "favored" teams even more so.

Hehe heddan. I've removed the note about your absence and I wish you all the luck balancing this with your social life :o)

dirtbox: Ok, removed.

Fastidious:
From what I read in your comment, it sounds like you are under the impression div1 captains will play with the div2 team, that is not the case. They simply pick the players. Maybe this could be discussed for next season, I kinda like the idea :)
#26 B1aze - 2012-11-09 19:48 (65.47.29.XXX)
Please record the stream and share it after the show.
Have other plans for Sunday but will love to check the show later.
#27 Fastidious - 2012-11-09 23:57 (75.4.129.XXX)
No Paradoks, I understood they don't play with that team but they still draft it and it's in their best interest to make great picks as that's their back up players for div1. One cool thing about draft leagues is they are still largely unexplored territory and lots of ideas can still be experimented with. Wish I lived in EU so I could play.

If we apply game theory to this situation then the above is basically an indicator of an imperfect market - essentially if all captains can judge player skill effectively, then the optimal strategy should be to simply pick the best player each time. The above would only come into play in situations where players have an affinity with each other i.e. Captain 1 wants player X even though player Y is 'better' because they have a good relationship/understanding (clanmates perhaps).

Personally I can't see this strategy being particularly effective in leagues with a large number of, in theory, well-balanced teams. In the above scenario even if you might weaken Team 1 more than your own, it puts you at a disadvantage against the other 6 teams.
#29 cara - 2012-11-10 18:36 (217.209.214.XXX)
My suggestion would be: Try to pick the players you find to be the best each round. That´s hard enough.
#30 Fastidious - 2012-11-10 18:49 (75.4.129.XXX)
It is complex and not sure it works but just something I've seen argued about before. There are definitely certain player combinations which work better than others. Maybe one way to stop Milton. ;-)
#31 Hooraytio - 2012-11-12 09:31 (85.228.251.XXX)
Nice show last night! When will we see the groups?
#32 zero - 2012-11-12 10:55 (89.135.124.XXX)
we'r going to fix the groups 2nite
#33 rkd - 2012-11-12 19:52 (77.53.184.XXX)
If we notice 1-2 div2 teams who have big issues with attendancy and maybe 1-2 div2 teams who have 6 super active players then simplest and most logical move would be to move around a player or 2 between teams to ensure activity, and ofcourse it would be one of the 5th or 6th men on the team that would get moved.
Pointless to have a 6th man who is extremely active in a team where he won't get playing time when another team needs an active player.
